Mobile Obby Games: Parkour & Obstacle Courses

An obby is an obstacle course you run on foot: platforms, gaps, moving hazards and a finish line. Brainytrainee publishes two of them for iPhone, iPad and Android — Mega Obby and Prison Escape — and both install as ordinary mobile games with no Roblox account involved.

What makes a game an obby

The name is short for obstacle course, and the genre grew up inside Roblox, where players built courses for each other to clear. The shape of it barely changed on the way to mobile: a chain of platforms, a hazard on each one, a checkpoint every so often, and a restart that is fast enough that failing does not feel like a punishment.

What separates a good obby from a frustrating one is whether the difficulty is readable. A spinning beam that always turns at the same speed is fair; a tile that collapses with no warning the first time is not. Both of our obby games are built on hazards you can learn — the first attempt at a section teaches you the pattern, and the second one is on you.

Obby games also tend to be the genre that mobile players search for by name, because the alternative — playing them inside a platform — needs an account, a login and a download of something much bigger. A standalone obby is a 100-megabyte install that opens straight into a level.

How our two obby games differ

Mega Obby is the open, colourful one. Courses are rainbow platforms over a lava floor, the extra modes each change one rule — glass floors, falling blocks, timed towers — and the sandbox editor lets you build a course from the same block set the game uses. It is the larger of the two, and the one with the most to do after you have cleared the main content.

Prison Escape is the tighter, more deliberate one. Instead of open courses you get corridors, and instead of environmental hazards you get patrolling guards and laser grids on fixed timers. It rewards watching before moving. There is no level editor, and the game is smaller — 500+ installs on Google Play against Mega Obby's 10,000+ — but the moment-to-moment timing is stricter.

If you only try one: start with Mega Obby if you want variety and something to build, and Prison Escape if you want a pure timing challenge.

Obby games for iPhone and iPad

Both games are on the App Store and need iOS 15.0 or later, which covers iPhone 8 and newer, every current iPad, and iPod touch (7th generation). Controls are a virtual stick and a jump button in the lower corners, so a bigger iPad screen mostly means you can see more of the course ahead rather than a different layout. Both are localised into 16 languages.

Obby games for Android phones and tablets

Both games are on Google Play with an Everyone content rating. Mega Obby has passed 10,000 installs and holds a 4.7 rating there; Prison Escape is newer on the platform and Google Play does not display a score for it yet. Android builds carry the same levels, modes and cosmetic items as the iOS ones — there is no platform-exclusive content in either game.

Which obby game should you start with?

Pick Mega Obby if you want the bigger game: more modes, more cosmetic items and a sandbox editor that keeps going after the built-in courses run out. Pick Prison Escape if what you actually enjoy is timing — waiting for the guard to turn, counting the laser sweep, and moving on the beat. Both are free, so the honest answer is to install whichever appeals and try the other later.

Ads, purchases and safety in our obby games

Both games are free to download and playable in full without spending anything. Optional in-app purchases cover cosmetic items, extra modes and removing ads, and every payment runs through Apple's or Google's own system — we never see card details.

The free versions show ads between levels; a one-time purchase removes them. Neither game has open chat with other players: leaderboards show scores and names only. Both carry an Everyone rating on Google Play, but their App Store ratings differ: Mega Obby is 4+ and Prison Escape is 9+, which Apple applies for the mild cartoon violence of the guards and traps. Neither contains gore or horror.

The other genre

A virtual pet game gives you an animal to look after — feeding, washing, playing, decorating — with no way to lose. Brainytrainee publishes two: Cat Simulator, currently on iPhone and iPad, and Talking Dog, on both stores and listed on Google Play as Virtual Pet Simulator - Archie. Browse virtual pet games →

Frequently asked questions

What is an obby game?+

An obby — short for obstacle course — is a platformer where you run and jump through a course of platforms and hazards to reach a finish line. The genre started inside Roblox and moved to mobile as standalone games.

Can I play obby games without Roblox?+

Yes. Mega Obby and Prison Escape are standalone apps published by Brainytrainee Ltd. You install them from the App Store or Google Play and play immediately — no Roblox account, login or platform connection. They do not include the rest of the Roblox platform, such as worlds built by other players or a shared avatar.

Are obby games free on iPhone and Android?+

Both of ours are. They are free to download on the App Store and Google Play, with optional in-app purchases for cosmetics, extra modes and ad removal.

Do obby games work offline?+

The levels do. Leaderboards and other online features need a connection, but you can play the courses without one.

What age ratings do these obby games carry?+

Mega Obby is rated 4+ on the App Store; Prison Escape is rated 9+, which Apple applies for the mild cartoon violence of guards and traps. Both carry Everyone on Google Play. The action in each is cartoon-style — being caught simply restarts the section — with no gore and no open chat between players. Our guidance for parents covers purchases, ads and device controls.
